Saxophonist/Composer/Arranger Tom Erickson attended the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music (BM in performance 2004), where he was winner of the Lamont Composition Contest (2002,’03 and ’04), and the Lamont Chamber Competition (2002). Tom was also a member of the Lamont Jazz Orchestra, and Lamont Symphony Orchestra, who both won Downbeat Awards for outstanding collegiate ensemble. Tom currently studies under Jim McNeely at William Paterson University in New Jersey.
Tom has performed with Dave Devine, Eric Gunnison, Colin Stranahan, Flying Dragon Orchestra, Olstead-Montgomery Big Band, Cleo Parker-Robinson Dance Company, Darren Kramer Organization, 9th & Lincoln Orchestra, and 10,000 Maniacs, as well as performing at the Yellowstone and Longmont Jazz Festivals. As a composer/arranger, Tom's music has been performed by the Flying Dragon Orchestra (leader), 9th & Lincoln Orchestra, North Texas Lab Bands, Yellowstone Big Band, Lamont Jazz Orchestra, Northwest College Big Band, RSHS Tiger Jazz Orchestra, and the William Paterson University Jazz Orchestra feat. Randy Brecker. One of Tom's compositions, "If Only For A Moment," was recently selected to be performed by Chuck Owen and the Jazz Surge at the 2nd International Jazz Composers Symposium.
Tom is also the leader of the Flying Dragon Orchestra; an 18 piece modern jazz ensemble fusing traditional big band sounds with many outside influences including classical, alternative, rock, hip-hop, electronica and nu-jazz. Their debut self titled CD was released in August of 2009. Tom is currently finishing graduate school and plans to form a NY based incarnate of the Flying Dragon Orchestra in the near future.
